And this is something that the articles mentioned and offers some good ideas of how we can make students participate.
The first article mentioned 10 benefits of students' participation and I am going to explain all of them. First, "Participation adds interest" it said that for students is bored only listen the teacher explanation and that something that could help is ask for students' opinion; maybe one of the students have an idea of the topic and it could be meaningful for them listen another opinion. Second, "Participation engages students" means that for students is interesting when they have a question that helps them to understand the topic. Third, "Participation provides the teacher feedback" it said that teachers could give feedback by listen students' answers and in this way they can clear their doubts. Fourth "Participation provides the students feedback" by some questions sudents can see the importance of some ideas or information. Fifth,"Participation can be used to promoted preparation" This is a good way to keep students focus on the topics, because you can ask some questions of the last class and this is going to make them be prepared for the following classes. Sixth, "Participation can be used to control what's happening in class" this is to make sure your students are paying attention on class and not on their cellphones or another distractor. Seventh, " Participation can be used to balance who's contributing in class and how much" this benefit is mostly to know the fluency and the vocabulary knowledge of the students. Eighth, "Participation encourages dialogue among and between students" this offers students to give an opinion of something that a classmates said, it could be a question or extra information that the student want to share. Ninth, "Participation can be used to develop important speaking skills" participation may help students to feel confident and increase their vocabulary and those things help in students' fluency. Tenth, "Participation gives students the opportunity to practice using the language of the discipline" this means that students can practice in different situations and not only in one as some others carrers that focused their vocabulary only in one area.
The second article mention two ideas for students' participation that teachers could put in practice. The activities are "The Think-Pair-Share" and "The Circle Chat". The think-pair-share is about give a question to the studens this question has to make students think for a minute and then they have to share their opinions to a partner. Give them some minutes and then ask them to share their opinios to the hole class. The article said that this activity makes them feel confident because they share the opinion of two people and not only their own one. The circle chat, in this activity the class is divided in two, and the half of the class has to form a circle and the other half has to form another circle around the first one; each student has to have a partner and they are going to ask some questions related to the topic, and when 2 minutes pass, one of the circles have to move one step to the right in order to change partner. They can change partners 2 or 3 times more. This helps them to have different opinions and point of view of a topic and also helps them to improve their speaking skill.
In conclusion. it is important to keep students participating in class because this helps them to remember in a meaningful way the topics and also is a funny way to practice what they studied in class. Participations increase their vocabulary and also they receive feedback in the moment, and with that they develop their speaking skill.
