week 5: Critical thinking and technology in class

Rate: 5

Based on the article: "Critical thinking and technology" by Ken Bain.

A critical thinking is important to give our opinion about something. But, how we can do or teach someone to do it? Well, in this article I found some things that we could put in practice to improve that. But first, It explains why and how people learn.

First, the article mention that our nature as human is being curious. We always try to know why something happen?, or how does something work?, and we are always looking for answers. Second, we are emotional creatures. We always try to understand the attitudes of everyone, or try to solve problems. So, if we know that, we can facilitate the learning process to our students by giving them some questions that they can investigate in their house. For example, we can ask them to search about "what the elephants eat?, and how they solve problems?". Or something that is from their interest and that excited them to know more about that. Also, we can ask them things that we know they have previous knowledge or they have heard about that. And give them more information, but it is important to give them the opportunity to participate in class and keep them active.

The article also mention that people like to learn from different kinds of learning personalities. We can learn in a visual way by watching videos, images, etc. Or in an auditory way by talking to others and sharing knowledges. There exist a lot of ways in which we learn and we do not notice about that. "Brain loves diversity" and we can mix some learning personalities and create the one that works with us. Using colors, music, images, etc. Be creative.

Teachnology can help us to think critically. We can used it to develop our cognitive skill, we can look for games, or apps that can help us to analyse or synthesize. It is necessary that sometimes we give to our brain a challenge and resolve a problem. We can also teach less in a traditional way and more in a significant way. In which exists more interaction between students.

This is a picture that may help us.

  1. I agree with you Sandra. We learn because we are extremely curious, we want to know everything. So, in the case of our students, we should take advantage of that, we can provide them tasks or leave them to investigate about something, etc, the important thing here is to keep them active and require them to think critically. In addition, it is true that each person has their own way to learn either visual, kinesthetic, auditory or all of them combined, so, knowing that I consider that our activities must be created using different learning styles.

  2. I really liked your post Sandra and I agree wit you. We have to find a way to teach that keep our students focus on the class and as you mentioned we can ask them to investigate about topics they are interted in so they can get motivated and learn better. Another point is to take into account the type of learners we have sop we acomodate our classes to them and technology is a great tool that can help us meet our students needs and also to foster critical thinking in students
